The core difference
An overhead crane runs on runways inside a building; a gantry crane stands on legs on the ground or a foundation. If there is no building or runway, gantry is often the only option.
Choose overhead when
- You have a shop building with runways.
- You need maximum hook height under the roof.
- Loads move along fixed bays (assembly, maintenance).
Choose gantry when
- The work is outdoors (yards, precast, ports) — with wind anchors and rail clamps.
- There is no building, or adding runways is costly.
- You need to move along a long span (container, material yards).
